External Sales & Business Development Manager

Where were you born?

I am originally from Royston, Hertfordshire but have worked all over the country in external sales for most of my working life. I joined a local roofing material manufacturer from school and started in their sales office. Quickly progressing from the sales office into a role in external sales initially in Norfolk and Suffolk selling to corrugated sheet users. The Etex Group acquired the company and my journey into sales team management began in earnest. Over the years with Eternit and Marley I have managed many different teams, with responsibility for both specification and commercial sales across a wide range of products including Decorative Cladding Boards, Roof Tiles, Slates and Profile Sheets, in all parts of the country.

Introduce us to your family

I am married, with 3 grown up children and four grandchildren, my daughter lives in Germany with her husband who is in the British army based in Paderborn, and both my sons work for Anglian Water locally.

Do you have any pets?

Yes, we have a large very friendly Bernese Mountain dog called Ruby, who is wonderful with the grandchildren letting them play with her and generally make a fuss of her.

Any hobbies? What do you do outside of work?

Lots going on, so not much time for relaxing at the moment but I still enjoy my  music, still playing the drums in a function/covers band (one of many bands over the years), although we are currently “resting” due to time constraints. However that does leave me with time to spend with my family and spoil my gorgeous grandchildren rotten at every opportunity.

What do you love?

I love that feeling when things you have worked hard for come to fruition whether it be a particularly nice profitable order, or maybe that customer you’ve been pursuing finally comes to you with some work and you can see a result for all the effort.  I love it when all the family come together for a special meal or a summer bbq, or any event that brings them all home.

What do you hate?

I hate false people, or people that can’t be straight with you, and when people are just plain rude and thoughtless in their dealings with others as there’s just no need in our day to day lives. We all work better with and respond better to people that are civil and pleasant to deal with both in our business and personal life.

What kind of person are you?

I like to think I’m friendly, outgoing, and fairly easy to get on with and have a professional approach to my work life and all the elements that entails. I enjoy working with, and as part of a “team” but I sometimes find my expectations of others can be too high.

What brought you to AJW?

I have known AJW as a business for many years and always thought of it as a well run company that was heading in the right direction, growing and developing in a market dominated by the large groups. I hope to continue to play my part in helping the business develop still further over the coming years by improving our external sales team’s performance, building our customer base and looking for new business opportunities with my team.

What does your job involve and what do you enjoy about it?

I enjoy the face to face contact with customers and managing external sales people and helping them develop. I also enjoy being the link between external and internal sales, and the interaction with senior managers and directors.

I was delighted to recently be appointed to manage our external sales team activity for AJW as it is an important milestone in the changing face of the company and development of the business. I will be working hard to put my experience gained over the years with companies such as Eternit, Marley, SSQ and Briarwood to good use in helping us to develop our sales team and grow the business.
