After the success of raising £2,341 from our 24-hour challenge back in July our Managing Director Alan Woods was determined to hit the £10K mark after our annual charity golf day. We are so proud and thankful to all those who supported our event to announce that we have hit our target for our chosen Charity of the year, The Phoenix Ward at Broomfield Hospital.
We chose ‘The Cambridgeshire Golf Club’ in Bar Hill as the venue for our golf day as the course is considered to be one of the best in Cambridge and they didn’t disappoint. The course was perfect and with the sun shining we could not complain. We had a total of 19 golf teams attend so we kicked the day of with a shotgun start, with the 19th team starting on the ‘AJW’ lettered putting competition. We made sure our teams were fed and watered through-out the day which they kindly donated monies to our charity for. Everyone was so generous with their donations.
To ensure that we reached our target we gave suppliers the opportunity to sponsor a hole which we received huge support for so a special thank you to Sandtoft, Etex, BMI-Redland, Kingspan, Millhouse Leasing, Flex-R, Filon, Rutters, CUPA PIZARRAS, Brett Martin, Ash & Lacy, Sahtas, Cambridge Garage Doors, ADS Construction, Seven Asset, Carlisle Construction Materials and JorisIde.
Alongside these suppliers we received a number of raffle and auction donations from a number of local suppliers; including Grantchester Tea Rooms, Saffron Walden Golf Course, Gog Magog’s Golf Course, Signed Cambridge United Football, plus a number of signed football and Rugby shirts. With such fantastic prizes we managed to raise over £4,500 from the Auction and raffle alone, this was also down to the way our compere ‘Jezo’ ran the auction. He did an incredible job and even managed to sell a salt and pepper shaker from the hotel; these were of course returned.
A special thank you has to go to Malcolm Webster who donated all of the football shirts. Malcolm is an Ex professional footballer who played with Arsenal and Cambridge United. He went onto be Assistant Manager at Cambridge and more recently goalkeeping coach at Ipswich Town working with Mick McCarthy. Malcolm donated a number of signed shirts including a West Ham United shirt which was signed by the current team, which alone raised us £320.
We held competitions through-out the day including Best Team, Best Golfer, Nearest Pin, Longest Driver, with the traditional wooden spoon being presented to the worst golfer. We presented the winners with a selection of prizes including a handmade plaque which Harrison’s Mum Debbie made to say thank you to us for supporting Harrison’s charity.

We would like to thank Debbie, Harrisons Mum, who attended the event on Friday and spoke about how this amazing charity helps her and her family. Even though she was incredibly nervous she did a great job’
The event was inspired by eight-year-old Harrison Hart whose dad Shaun works at AJW’s Witham depot. Harrison has a rare form of life-threatening epilepsy and regularly attends Phoenix ward for treatment.
Harrison’s mum, Debbie Hart, said: “I am so overwhelmed and amazed with everyone’s generosity and kindness this charity means the world to me because of how it helps Harrison and lots of other children to make their time in hospital more bearable. I would like to say a massive thank you to all the people that were involved in supporting this charity and also Alan and his family and all his staff at AJW’
Charlotte Jefcoate, fundraising coordinator at Mid Essex Hospitals Charity, said: “We are so fortunate to have AJW fundraising for us. To have raised over £11,000 so far is amazing and I’d like to thank Charlotte Woods and everyone at AJW for organising such a brilliant golf day’’.
“The generosity of everyone who supported the event, both players and sponsors, has been unbelievable. Phoenix ward do so much for children and their families, the money is going to a brilliant cause. The staff are incredibly grateful.”
We have now raised £11,108.63 for the charity and are positive we can still raise much more as the year goes on. Please dig deep and help us raise as much as we can for our chosen charity of the team and donate today via your local AJW depot.
