Five of our very own AJW team members take on the Yorkshire 3 Peaks
Our AJW team recently completed the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge in which they had to trek across Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough in an epic 38.6km round trip within 12 hours.
On Saturday 9th September five of our very own took on this intense and physically gruelling challenge. Dave Weare, Tom Woods, Harvey Ferris, Sophie Wood and Donald Goldsworthy-Ellson were among the brave volunteers to complete the Yorkshire 3 Peaks in a heroic effort to raise money for our chosen Charity of the Year 2023, East Anglian Air Ambulance.
Describing the day’s events, Dave Weare, Chatteris Branch Manager tells us some of his memorable moments…
“Two miles in I thought Don was going to die, I told him to stop and he then proceeded to complete 20 miles or whatever it was. LEGEND!
Harvey on the last peak, looking like he needed air lifting off, pale as anything, going at a snail’s pace, I ask are you ok mate, and his response was ‘I’m fine, I’ll die before I quit!’
The mountain guide telling me when we’re at the last 3km we wouldn’t make it in under 11 hours. I said ‘what if I ran it?’ he laughed at me, so I ran it and made it with 4 minutes to spare… what did he know!?
Having a dip in the river afterwards with Don.”
We also spoke to Sophie as the only lady who volunteered to take on the challenge from AJW, to get her experience of the day and how she felt once she finished that last peak! See what she had to say about the challenge below…
“Four months ago, someone at work asked if I would take part in the 3 peaks challenge to raise money for our chosen charity for the year…East Anglia Air Ambulance…After a small bit of bullying I finally agreed. Peer pressure is a wonderful thing.
On 9th September 2023, I not only did it but completed the Yorkshire 3 peaks challenge. It was one of the most physical and mental challenges I think I have ever done.
Three Peaks Yorkshire, you tested me in ways I didn’t know possible.
There was a point I was about to turn around & then this wonderful bunch of ladies told me to join their group. This was the best decision I made! I have never felt more humbled to join a wonderful group of ladies who were raising money for their friend who is no longer with them. I heard so many stories about her & know she’d be super proud of all you ladies & probably wetting herself watching you all.
Without these ladies, 100%, I wouldn’t have finished, but jeez am I proud of myself, no training and still somehow managed, 24 miles, 3 Peaks & on the hottest day of the year!
The views were to die for & so worth the pain. The feeling of crossing that finishing line was amazing & the wine even better, I mean, what clever person positioned a pub at the end?
To the people who donated, thank you – another reason I knew I couldn’t turn back.
To the people who said I wouldn’t or couldn’t do it… you just made me more focused.
To the new lifelong friends I have made, thank you. Thank you for letting me join you & for getting me to the end. Thank you for sharing your stories & making me laugh all the way through even if we wanted to cry at points.
And finally to myself, nothing is impossible & be proud of an achievement you never thought was possible.”
We at AJW would like to thank our team of 5 for being so incredibly head strong and willing to complete such an intense challenge in the name of our Charity of the Year, East Anglian Air Ambulance, what a truly incredible experience. One we know you will never forget, and neither will we!
Well done to you all for completing the Yorkshire 3 Peaks, you are all amazing and we are all so proud!
